From Iris Apfel's personal collection: Her personal copies of Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel Book. This is the book that went along with the groundbreaking 2005 Metropolitan Museum Iris Apfel exhibition that put Iris on the map as one of the world's greatest self-expressionists.
This is the essential Iris Apfel book for all fans. It showcases her outfits from the exhibition close-up in striking detail. You get an amazing sense of how and why she styled things the way she did. Best of all, the book painstakingly catalogs each item with designer, year and provenance, so you can see just how vast Iris Apfel's collection of clothing and accessories was. Complete with an essay from former Costume Director Harold Koda and Iris Apfel.
We have five of these--four have a note from the Norton Museum of Art in the front page. The “Rare Bird of Fashion: The Irreverent Iris Apfel” exhibition made its debut at The Norton Museum of Art in 2007.
Each book will arrive with a provenance card.
Official synopsis of the book: "Over ninety sumptuous color plates, photographed by Eric Boman, show off a selection of Apfel's extraordinary outfits on wittily posed mannequins, some sporting her trademark outsized spectacles. The originality of her style is typically revealed in her mixing of Dior haute couture with flea-market finds, Dolce & Gabbana lizard trousers with nineteenth-century ecclesiastical vestments, pink Lanvin worn with ropes of Navajo turquoise. Apfel's eclectic pieces might come from a Parisian couture house, an American thrift shop, or a North African souk, or they may have been made to her own design in a tiny studio."
Iris Apfel's Library: Renowned maximalist icon Iris Apfel started her career as an interior decorator before founding her textile company, Old World Weavers. For her eclectic sense of personal style, she drew from art, culture and prints and patterns from all over the world. Prized in her personal collection of objects were a vast series of books ranging in subjects from photography to art, design, textiles and fashion. These undoubtedly served as a main source of inspiration behind all her wildly styled, mesmerizing fashion looks. Some of these books are inscribed, bookmarked, or embedded with personal notes. We will note which ones have these little Easter Eggs in the descriptions.
Due to their authentic provenance and delicate nature, items from the personal collection of Iris Apfel are final sale and non-returnable. Each piece will arrive with a provenance card.
