From Iris Apfel's personal collection: A dazzling pair of extremely old earrings that are museum-worthy. Iris Apfel's solid gold Antique Iberian Green Bow Dangle Earrings are made of openwork low karat gold set with green paste in closed settings, some set in high collets which are riveted to the metal base. They come with a traditional back-to-front closures.
In her books, Iris wrote about her many antique and flea market adventures all over the world. These earrings may have been acquired on one of those trips.
Similar styles, rendered in silver gilt and paste, are seen in the V&A catalog. From V&A's website: "Traditional jewellery often followed out-dated aristocratic examples. Many Spanish traditional earrings were based on 17th and 18th century patterns, but over time local differences became fixed, and patterns became characteristic of a particular place. Their girandole shape is 18th century in origin, but the green pastes, and particularly the small pieces of mirror glass, are typical of 19th century Spanish traditional jewellery. The import of emeralds from South America from the late 16th century onwards made green the most fashionable colour in jewellery throughout Spain."
Due to their authentic provenance and delicate nature, items from the personal collection of Iris Apfel are final sale and non-returnable. Each piece will arrive with a provenance card.
