This Antique Victorian Jet-Black Beaded Mourning Bag with Ornate Gilt Frame, c. 1890–1910 is a rare piece of late-Victorian drama: thousands of faceted black glass "French jet" beads, densely worked over a supple body and finished in a swishy looped fringe that still moves beautifully. An ornately cast gilt brass frame stamped with a running band of tiny florals cements her beauty.
The original cream silk lining has shattered in that unmistakable antique way (weighted silk, doing what weighted silk does after a century), with its little interior pocket and metallic braid trim still intact. We consider this a feature, not a flaw; it's a true proof of the era's fingerprint.
For the mourning-jewelry collectors, the antique textile people, and anyone whose personal aesthetic is deeply unique. Please see worn photos for sizing.
MATERIALS: Beads, silk, gilt tone metal.
ERA: Late Victorian or early Edwardian, estimated 1890 - 1910.
CONDITION: In good condition, commensurate with age. Lining fragile as expected. This is a display darling or a very gentle carry.
